Hi just got unreal gold from gog, when I try multiplayer there are no players (it seems to use gamespy to find games which is long dead) is it still possible to play multiplayer, and if so how?

Get a LAN emulator like Evolve or Hamachi.

The fact that Unreal doesn't have an official master server replacement is strange, though, since all Unreal Tournament games were migrated to a different server once GameSpy went down.

EDIT: OldUnreal.com seems to have some replacements.
