I first tried to play this game not that many years after it came out on an extremely crap PC and gave up, less than impressed, about a third of the way in as it chugged along even at 320X240 resolution. So you'll understand my expectations weren't that high on hitting the New Game button this time around. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. The horsepower available to modern PCs means you can run this game maxed out and the processor barely bothers to shrug its shoulders. And all these years on, it somehow looks fantastic. But that's not the key point. This game draws you in and - I'm now entering the last third - keeps you there. It's remarkable.

I agree, it is one of the few games I played alll the way through & one of the reasons of course was because the story was good all the way through to the end.
Definitely. I've been playing video games since 1979 and this is truly one of the most memorable series for me. The gorgeous vistas and haunting electronic music really create a vivid atmosphere that sticks with you. The soundtrack is simply superb.
Unreal has extremely atmospheric music that really sets the mood, definitely one of my favorite game soundtracks, Alexander and Michiel did a fantastic job on it.
Too bad almost all games in the genre since have gone for minimalistic ambiance and generic John Williams wannabe orchestral crap.
It does the story bit really great as well: let the player explore and discover things for themselves, no annoying cut-scenes and mission briefings.
I also like how the main character (or characters in co-op, which is great with this game) is completely anonymous and simply acts as an avatar for the player (I realize that this is true for most FPSs before Unreal too, but still).
