gbarules2999: The exe file is the installer itself, which they separate from the data files with large games. This is a mechanic so that they can update the installer alone if there's an issue. I assume the installer slideshow isn't going to show a screenshot of the GOG.com website in beta form forever. (I'd prefer they do this with every game, because I don't have the fastest internet, but I do agree that it would be a pain to archive.)
All three are not 2 GB overall; they are just barely over it. The largest 2 GB file is exactly 2 GB, along with a 3 MB installer and a 5 MB file. I don't know why you think differently; this was reiterated by both Vista and Ubuntu on my end A copy and paste job: "2.0 GB (2,097,510,656 Bytes)"). Perhaps there's a setting that changes the formatting a bit in the file size so that it's displayed differently for you or for GOG.com. Maybe my computer's wrong. Who knows? I doubt it matters much.
As both I and the other poster said above, an exe file cannot handle more than 2 GB in a file at a time. So there must have just been a sliver of data left over from compressing and it had to be left dangling on the edge. Considering the game is 6.5 GB uncompressed, that's a pretty big difference once installed. Even if I'm wrong and it is under 2 GB, I'd rather they play it safe anyway and go the "annoying" route rather than "it doesn't work on my computer" route.
Yes, it's a crying tragedy that the game was just slightly too big to fit into one big file. I agree. Now go ahead and grow up a bit before you start throwing insults around at the slightest provocation, and you might just be part of this gang of "adults" you claim I do not belong in.
Correct, the one bin is showing 2,097,510,656 bytes, but that still leaves 49,972,991 bytes before hitting the (2^31)-1 limit of 2GB file size. With the second bin being only 3,010,009 bytes... that's a buffer of 46,962,982 bytes. The executable is only 2,489,303 bytes, still over 40,000,000 bytes left... even if they split the executable off from the data files, why two bin files when both would easily fit together?
If you believe my math is wrong, please point out where, but keep in mind that 1GB is not equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes.
I just found it odd, and was curious as to why the files were split the way they were (It's not keeping me from enjoying the game). So I thought I'd ask if any one knew why, and so far the data doesn't back up anything anyone (including yourself) has provided.
I'm going to ignore your insults and provocations, but if you do have any "useful" information to this puzzle, please do share.
