OK this is the third time I've entered the sewers and it's happening again. For some reason I am losing 4 points of damage a second (in purple digits) and I don't seem able to stop it. Anyone know a cure?

Leeches! You got them while walking in the water. They are placed in your inventory, just open it and click them to get rid of them. Later in the game you will get vampire bats attaching to you in a similar way.
