[EDIT]: I updated Underrail from my original GOG download 1.0.0.2 to the current 1.0.0.10, and then spot checked; well, just one of the unmarked containers, and it was still there unmarked. So.. I guess those 'secret' containers are probably a feature. I'll be trying to find them... :)

I'm finding the occasionally unmarked container in the world of Underrail.

These are shelves, boxes, desks, footlockers, etc. (even toilets), that don't highlight when pressing TAB or Z; but do highlight when you mouse-over them. And they sometimes have good loot; such as Oddity's (Oddities?), so it can be worthwhile to find them.

Some are even 'hidden' behind things, so that unless your PC goes behind that thing, you the player won't ever see it (since TAB won't reveal it).

For example, in the attached screenshot (in Core City, otherwise spoiler-free), a toilet that TAB does not reveal, contains an Oddity. So, just like the Dude, it's worth taking another look in that toilet bowl. It's down there somewhere.

(Some do 'sort of' reveal via TAB, in that the TAB causes the container to 'jump in front of' anything blocking it. So you can spot that 'jump' and catch some that way.)

They could be either a bug or a feature. I don't know which. I'm still playing on the older GOG version 1.0.0.2, so maybe this is something patched out later. Don't know. I've been screenshot'ing them as I find them; and there's not a lot of them so far; but enough of them to be worth looking around carefully.

Either way, I think it's cool to have to them. I like the idea that not everything is highlighted and is there for those players looking around a bit more closely than just using TAB.

Anyone else finding them? Or know if it's a bug or feature?

I found the toilet one you posted. I can't think of any others I've noticed, but maybe I'm forgetting.

Do you recall if it contained the same Bubblegum Oddity as in my screenshot?

Yes, I believe it did. I'll re-check when I get back there, since I'm in the midst of a new playthrough.

I remember that, in a cave not too far from SGS, there's a bear trap near a wall, and behind the bear trap is a container marked "Hole." The hole has a few items in it. I don't think that one shows up with TAB, but the label shows if you hover the cursor over it.

I know of a spot that matches that description, but it does highlight via TAB in my 1.0.0.10 copy of the game.

I went back to an older save from before I ever went into that zone to check it..

Attached is a screenshot of it (with TAB pressed). WARNING: MINOR SPOILER (for those that haven't been thre yet)

That spot?

Yes, that's the one. I didn't remember it highlighting with TAB, but obviously it does, so it's out.

Or maybe it got patched. I haven't yet gotten to recheck all 10 of the ones I know of from a previous partial-playthru since I patched up my copy of Underrail. Perhaps they also show up now via TAB.

Even if the ones I haven't gotten back to yet, on this current playthru, are still there; it might only mean someone hasn't pointed them out to the devs; who would then patch them out (like those 'empty' containers that don't stay empty [and might even eat your stuff if you store anything in them]; I read a dev post where they've asked players to report locations of them for fixing).

I like the idea of them; so I'm in no hurry to 'report' them even if they are considered a bug. :)

I like them too. I wouldn't consider them bugs at all, especially since there's nothing plot-critical about them.
I hate that tabbing for things is even a feature that works for sooo much. Yes, for remains behind walls or a dropped items even, but, everything coming up with tab is meh. I like to look for the things and find them with my eyes.

Look on the bright side: at least TAB doesn't make interactive objects glow.

I guess you could just not use TAB. I think there's a way to unbind it in a configuration file somewhere.

Simply not using it would be fine in that case.

The problem is as drealmer7 mentioned - some items; such as remains or 'stuff' behind a wall; may not be visible unless tab is pressed, so a method to target those types of things would be needed. Unfortunately atm TAB is the way to do it - which also highlights everything else (that's going to highlight).

Attached is another unmarked container screenshot. It's only a MINOR LOCATIONAL SPOILER, because it's in a location where it is not very hard to spot (it even could be the first one someone finds and then perhaps notes to themselves, 'hey, not all things highlight'). (I took the screenshot in v1.0.0.2; and have verified it's still unmarked in 1.0.0.10)

I've found 10 or 11 of these things so far.. (up thru approximately Core City). They're fun little things to find (especially when they have a nice Oddity in them)

tl;dr: Some are bugs, some are features.

Comment from one of the devs on underrail.com forums:
While there are a lot of unintentionally unmarked containers in the game, if you find one in a more secluded spot and it holds an oddity or something nice, then you can be pretty sure that's intended.
So the nice little secrets are intended to be unlabeled. But if you find something mundane, clearly visible and empty like a barrel/junkpile without a text label, that's a bug.
