I've tried it with a Logitech gamepad, PS3 controller, Xbox Series X controller and a Switch Pro controller.

The game fails to recognize every one.

The only way I've found to use a gamepad is via Enjoyable. However, the movement controls become sluggish after twenty to thirty minutes.

To conclude: barring an (unlikely) update, any Mac user wishing to try this game would be better off buying a console version.
