I played Black Gate after Serpent Isle--being hooked so much by the series, but felt confused and intimidated by the huge world--as oppose to the smaller scale of Serpent Isle. It didn't diminish the enjoyment, though. Afterwards I hunted down the rest of the series, starting from U6, then U5, and much later on finally managed to order a copy of Ultima Collections, which compiled the entire series in a single disc.
I tried very hard to enjoy replaying U1-U4, but unable to fool myself of the fact that my gaming perspective has changed so much since the first time I played them.
As for Xenogears, I, too, used emulator to replayed it by making ISOs out of the original disks. I hate the seemingly "forced" work on disk 2. I mean, I wouldn't mind paying more if the game had to be made in 4 disks or more, because the story was indeed long. Essentially a love story that spanned over 10,000 years, crafted in such a way it didn't feel like the typical weepy romance BS. Feels epic and grand. Even now.
