Hi everybody,

I decided to take a slight risk and buy the Ultima IV/V/VI collection, since it was on sale for just $1.49. I've never really played an Ultima game before (save for maybe a few minutes of Ultima Underworld and Ultima VII), so this will be a new experience for me.

Being that Ultima IV is such an old game, I want to mod it so that it looks and plays at least like an early-90's PC game. I know there are a couple different fan-made mods that update the graphics, UI, etc. Namely the "Ultima IV Upgrade Patch" and "xu4" source port. Would it be a good idea for me to patch the game with both of these? Or can I only patch it with one? If so, which should I patch it with? I've read, too, that the Ultima IV Upgrade patch has a crash bug at the character creation stage that was never resolved.

Also, are there other recommended mods for the game?

I guess I'm basically looking for an "Ultima IV Modding Guide."

I just used the Ultima-Patcher, added VGA-graphics and Midi-music and the other buxfixes/patches.

While I don't know of a modding guide, there are two approaches to upgrading U4.

1) Patch

You can grab the patch from http://www.moongates.com/u4/upgrade/Upgrade.htm and install it yourself - OR - get the Ultima Patcher from http://www.pixsoriginadventures.co.uk/category/ultima-patcher/ which will install the patch for you and allow you to select some alternative tiles & music arrangements.

2) New engine

XU4 (http://xu4.sourceforge.net/) is a recreation of Ultima 4's engine and adds a whole host of new features, customizations, graphic options, etc. The dungeon graphics are also way better. This is my preferred way to play U4.
