Anyway is the game, at least the GOG version, playable at least?

I mean does it play like any game with a more modern/conviniant control scheme?

But if you love Ultima universe & it's lore...
Just - don't .

Turn 'Ascension' off, uninstall & play Ultima VII .


Anyway - if you gonna play - just say 'Hi" from me to one dead character (What's a paladin ? Arggghhhhhhhhh)...

Well the game is playable so far but I have been turned off a bit by the controls.

Like do numbered hot keys even work?

And I have to move the charcater with the arrow keys :P

But I was shocked at how "Open-ended" this game is. Like say everything feels like I can do something in it.

Like using a wind spell to knock out something that holding something else in place.

Are the dungeons as large and sprawling as a Zelda dungeon?

Like it could have been a decent game....if it was not Ultima.

No. Dungeons is small & rather boring.
If you looking for interesting 'dungeons' - go ahead & see Ultima VII. =)

Can't say better. As "Ascension" - this is a good game. Not masterpiece, no. It's like 7\10.

But as part of Ultima series - it's horrible heresy !
Especially when it comes for lore.... It's awful. Just awful.

If you played & loved other Ultima games - I think you allready figured out what I mean.

Paladin jokes aside, it's a good game. Not a good Avatar Trilogy ending by any means, but it's a good game. I'd say there are some better ways to play it though. There are community patches and tools for it, along with bug fixes, and a patch to remove the speech and put in text like the older games had. Played using all of this, and turning off your brain's expectations for what a proper Ultima game should be, it's actually a really fun game. IMO at least.

My personal favorites are U6, Complete U7, and U8. (U8 probably has the best atmosphere, but is a bit of a departure from the rest.) U9 would come after those, but it's still good. I haven't played the ones before U6 significantly.

It might possibly be considered an okay and just maybe good 'game' in general, but it does too much damage to the setting and characters to be considered a good Ultima game in my opinion.
