artician: When playing underworld 1, it seems strafing and backing up have an extremely inconsistent direction and speed. Sometimes Strafe and Back will actually move diagonally, and more often than not the speed will be incredibly slow, like 1/20th the speed of walking.
If anyone knows what the hell is up with this, please let me know how to fix it!
Hey, I have the same problem. I looked around and found and old post saying that if the framerate is too high, this would happen. So they recommended lowering the number of cycles way down, to something like 14000, in dosbox. After some frustration and tinkering around in the GOG configuration files I managed to get it running like I wanted, more or less. Still a bit choppy.

Edit: I was working with another copy o UW1 I have, not the GOG one. I have managed to run the game in the way I wanted with GOG but I can't launch it from Galaxy, and I had to extract the game files to a folder and change the mount location to that folder, so I could change the audio settings in the game (I'm used to something different from what GOG defaults, I can't help it). If you want I can detail what I did more precisely. It's still kinda weird and buggy but it works.
Edit 2: I've been messing around with the settings and files. So, what I've gathered is this:
The game comes in a .iso file called game.gog. It contains UW1 and UW2. You can extract it with 7zip and, by editing the config files you can get a launcher to correctly launch the game. If you select another sound output format through uinstall, the game won't launch. I think that's because of some weird fix GOG has that's specific to their default selection. So don't touch this unless you're dissatisfied with their choice of soundcard. Creating a .iso file from the altered files didn't work and it reverted back to the original, somehow.
For me, I had two additional problems. First, at 14000 cycles the game was still weird, low framerate or something. I just changed it to 20000 and it ran great for me. I think that's very specific to your machine. Second, at fullscreen on my 1920x1080 monitor, the game was kindof stretched in an ugly way. I changed the scaler from normal2x to normal3x and fullscreen, while still not fullscreen, was much prettier and proportional.
I wish GOG would include the possibility of changing the soundcard selection easily, without breaking their system. Right now I'm running the game from my own dosbox and the extracted game.gog file.
