dtgreene: I don't remember being able to throw potions like that.
The SNES version, while more faithful than many of the other console ports, does still have its differences, like showing actual damage amounts (something I really wish the PC versions did), and not letting you attack non-hostile townspeople, so it's quite possible that there may be a difference here.
Not every item is useful in this game.
MechaGodJovi: I definitely wished some of the improvements from the SNES version got carried over at some point because I like the PC version better but still love them both.
Can you at least sell them or am I better off just not picking them up? Maybe I was just thinking of the oil flasks but it's been like 25 years since I last touched either version for more than an hour and I was 8 then so might explain my garbled memory. Thanks for the reply!
I don't know if there's a place to sell potions.
Of course, the SNES version does have its shortcomings, like not being able to attack friendly NPCs, and the omission of some spells (mostly spells that most people never use, but Enchant is one of the missing spells), but it still has some nice improvements.
Ultima 4's two console versions also have some nice improvements. The NES version has less random combat, and I especially like the fact that you can equip a sword and a bow at the same time; also, reducing the maximum number of participants in a battle helps keep the game flowing, as does allowing you to wander rooms outside of combat mode after all enemies are killed. The SMS version while more faithful to the original, allows you to attack diagonally, and allows you to mix multiples of a spell in a single operation (like in Ultima 5).
The NES version of Ultima 4 is different enough from the original while still being good in its own way that I recommend it even if you've played the original.
The NES version of Ultima 5, on the other hand, should be avoided.
