I have not yet successfully dispelled an Energy Field barrier using the Dispel Field spell, although it seems to work on all the other field spells. Is there some trick I'm missing?

Hmm, that's weird. In Ultima VI it's pretty essential to need to cast dispel field on the energy fields surrounding the ladder in the Lycaeum in order to access that ladder and the Energy Field blocking Nicodemus' entrance in his house.

What system are you playing on, and what happens when you try to cast dispel field on an Energy Field? Where are these Energy Fields that are invulnerable to the Dispel Field spell?
The ones that don't yield to Dispel Field are ones that block passage through a doorway. They look as if they are stretched across the doorway. So far, I have encountered such fields 3 places: Nicodemus' shop, down in the basement of the castle inhabited by cyclops and in the Shrine of Control dungeon. The fields that look like they have been place on the floor are not a problem So, I have been able to get into the Lycaeum Library and Penumbra's house.

If you're talking about the doors with blue auras, you need to use the Unlock Magic spell, not Dispel Field.

By the way, the Magic Lock spell can turn any other door into this kind of door. This means that, by casting Magic Lock followed by Unlock Magic, you can open any door, even if it's supposed to require a specific key. (Does this count as an exploit?)

The fields I am talking about are not magically locked doors. They occur in doorways with no doors. When I look at them, they are identified as electric fields. Anyway, after additional exploration in the basement of the cyclops castle, I found that there was a switch behind a secret door that shut off the fields blocking the doors. So, I guess those barriers weren't meant to be dispelled by magic, after all.

Ohhh, electric fields, not energy fields.

Gotcha. Yup, those are switch-activated fields. Even if you cast dispel, they'll persist b/c electricity continues to supply them. You gotta cut off the electricity via a switch, which are sometimes really far away, or hidden behind an object that needs to be moved.

Those are in a few other places, like Covetous/Wrong and I think the Gargoyle Tombs. Super annoying when you're in an area with a buttload of switches, and you have to figure out which switches correspond to certain electric fields.
