I recently began playing Ultima V on my laptop, and have run into a bit of a snag: when I attempt to play the harpsichord, I can only play the "0" note. I'm not sure if this is because I haven't been taught in the game how to play it yet, or if the game is having problems due to the fact that I am playing as a laptop (it lacks a numpad).

Does anyone know why this is happening, and if so, how I can fix it?

Thanks in advance.
I remember this being a problem that was solved by pressing NumLock.

But if you don't have a numpad, I don't know what the solution could be.

If you have (or can borrow) a USB keyboard with a numpad you could try plugging that into your laptop just to get past the harpsichord part.

Thanks for the help. I figured hitting numlock might fix the problem but my laptop has no numpad and, thus, no numlock. :(

I'll hunt down a usb keyboard. If that doesn't work out, I guess I'll just have to skip to Ultima VI.

You *might* be able to work around this with the OS's keyboard mapping utility (Character Map in Windows) and/or any similar feature provided by DosBox itself (if it has that - I've never needed to check). At the time of U5's original release, the instruments were played via the number keys at the top of the keyboard rather than via the number pad, so those would be the keys you'd want to emulate.

I have a computer with no numlock as well. There may be a patch out there to fix this, but I found a USB number pad for about $10 USD and it fixed the problem. It's pretty useful to have for other things as well.

What laptop you have? In many laptops, there is possibility to use FN+ScrollLock key to activate fake number pad.

I have a Dell XPS L502X. Unfortunately I don't think I have a Scroll Lock key. :(

Hmm, interesting. It seems that in your laptop doesn't have numlock or fake keypad mode.

You may try this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/151715

There is instructions how to generate command line program caps_on.com which will turn num lock on.

After creating this program, you should run the program first from command line, and then run the game
Should be a function button on your laptop - hold that and use the keys around the "k" letter if it's anything like my laptop (might even be in little blue characters) - then you should be able ot play a resounding chorus of "stones"
Altogether:
67 8 98 7 87 6 765 3 67 8 78 9 89 0 67 8 98 7 87 6 765 3 67 8 98 7 65767 6
I had an exact problem except that I am playing from my gaming desktop.
My upper numeric keys were somehow mapped to like arrow keys or some sort and couldn't play the damn harpsichord.

Solved by disabling Numeric key. It just became regular 1 to 0 keys after pressing NumLock.
