For some reason, the moongates in my Ultima V game are not appearing. I go at night to areas where I know the moongates are supposed to be (I've tried the one near Britain, near Trinsic, and near Yew - which is the most obvious one. I know I'm in the right spot). I wai all night, moving around the area where I know it should be, and it never appears.

Is there something simple I've forgotten?
Anyone else have this problem?

You picked the right nights? They won't appear if the moons are in the wrong phases.

The other question that comes to mind is if this is a new game? If you are coming back to an old one there is a chance you moved the Moonstone(s).
In U5, the gates appear at night regardless of the moon phases. Only the destinations are affected by whatbthe moons are doing.

In the case of an older game reloaded from a save, if the gates have been moved, the Gate spell can get you to the new locations. It's also possible the stones are in inventory, not yet placed in a new spot.

If it's a new game just started, I'd suggest reinstallation and restarting from scratch.

I know this thread is old, but I ran into the same thing and thought I'd post what I dug up. As other replies have indicated, it's probably related to a problem with the "SAVED.GAM" file. I had used the saved-game editor and it messed up my moongate locations and status but I didn't really know it, I just never had the moongate showing up near Britain. http://wiki.ultimacodex.com/wiki/Ultima_V_Internal_Formats has the bits in the file that are related. Look around 0x28A if you have a decent hex editor and don't mind going there. You can compare to "INIT.GAM" if you want to see what starting values look like. Mine were definitely messed up and I'm guessing it was that windows "save game editor" thing I found floating around the internet that modified them.

EUREKA! Thank you SO MUCH - this is exactly how I fixed my own save game, the offending offset was at 0x29A and just needed to be zeroed out

Thank you so much - guess it was karma for cheating but thank you so much for taking the time to post this!
