I'm currently playing through Ultima 5 (excellent, by the way) but had a question about status effects. I'm working through dungeon Covetous right now and I already have the Crown and Amulet. I have a habit of wearing the Crown because I love the magic negation and it basically renders enemies like Daemons inert (besides their huge amount of hit points and melee damage).

So, I encounter a group of daemons in Covetous and decide to buff the party with Quickness and Protection spells. I notice that the HUD underneath the character list on the right has changed and now daemons are suddenly possessing my party members.

Essentially it seems as if casting these spells removes the crown. Firstly, do these buffs stack, i.e. can the party benefit from Protection and Quickness simultaneously? Second, if I cast those spells and then put the Crown back on do the spells get cancelled?

I couldn't see a difference in combat and was otherwise wondering why the Crown was removed in the first place.

sadly only one global effect can be active at a time so in the case of daemons the crown is probably your best bet
i personally always had it active since you don't really need any of the other effects
