I've managed to get MT32 emulation working in this fork of DOSBOX I've been futzing with (works absolutely beautifully with Ultima 7 and Ultima Underworld, as well as a few Sierra games I've tested it on).

And in SETM.EXE for Ultima V, the test music plays properly when selecting Roland MT-32 in the menu. However, in the game itself, I hear no music.

Has anyone gotten MT-32 emulation to work properly with Ultima 5's music patch?

I haven't tried but I don't think I would recommend using MT32 emulation with the MIDI upgrades. When I re-arranged the MIDI files I balanced them for GM instruments and volumes. If you choose MT32 then the upgrade's driver would need to map the GM instruments to MT32 instruments and sounds, and I don't expect the volumes would be properly balanced.

Now for games like the early Sierra games where the music was actually composed for an MT32 - I think that's the best use of an MT32 emulator.
I see; I knew many DOS games uploaded their own sounds and programming patches to the MT32, but I guess I had also assumed the MT32 had a "default" set of sounds for General Midi purposes (and assumed that theoretically-existing MT32 soundfont would sound better than the Windows soundfont). But it looks like that is not the case.

I guess I'll settle for the default Windows soundfont and just remain forever jealous of the Apple 2 version's music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO6Jappcl30) :)

I am using mt32emu (munt) in Linux and it gives quite good Roland emulator. I don't know how hard it is to set up in Windows though.

Guys,
If you want to use MT-32 emulation (e.g. munt) for ULTIMA 5 (with music upgrade),
try this arranged .XMI music files.
http://pds25.egloos.com/pds/201305/22/71/ULTIMA5_MIDI_MT32.zip
It sounds much better than windows GS !!
(check this: http://pds27.egloos.com/pds/201305/22/71/u5theme_munt.mp3 )
By the way,
Dosbox on Mac plays much better GM sound without any emulation, surprising !

The other way is using software GM midi program such as BASSMIDI driver or VirtualMIDISynth;
check this site: http://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/virtualmidisynth
and check the result here: http://youtu.be/ZKZhuAb7xXw
