Does The GOG release of both Ultima Underworlds have a System Shock 1 esque Mouselook mod included? I need to know before I buy the game because the original UU1+2 and SS1 games controlled like absolute arse. I.e. they were unplayable.

This does not answer your question, but I have just recently finished playing UU1 and I am currently playing UU2. I have no problem with the controls at all, I find them very smooth and intuitive. I agree that looking/moving with the mouse is very frustrating, but the trick is to NOT use the mouse to move/look around, use the keyboard (the layout is similar to, but not exactly the same as, a normal WASD setup). Use the mouse for interacting with the environment and inventory.

Anyway, sorry for butting in without an answer to your question, but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents worth :).
No such thing included, but that hardly makes them unplayable.

That's all well and good but I hate WSAD. I have grown accustomed to using the mouse in my left hand because the cursor keys are positioned just right for moving around regardless of game (minus pinball sims) and labelled and arranged in such a way that you don't hit Q or E by mistake or turn caps lock on while trying to turn left so you accidently "shout" at someone when you next type something.

You'd be surprised how unplayable it makes them. SS1's controls were so bad before the Mouselook mod, Looking Glass had to include a rear-view mirror as one the hacker's augmentations. and adjust difficulty for multiple aspects of the game besides combat/puzzles even though that at least was an innovation. Perhaps I willt have to grin and bear it on Ultima U but i'm sticking to non-arse controls in SS1.

Not a ideal solution but you could use the mapper(ctrl+f1) in dosbox to at least change/rebind the keyboard keys to a setup your more comfortable with

Yeah, I have those from time to time. But in all seriousness I hope it helps make the game a little more tolerable for you to play.
While the Underworld games use a keyboard/mouse arrangement similar to System Shock 1, they don't use nearly as many functions and thus don't have the unwieldiness of SS1. Remapping the keys might make things a bit easier of course, but just using the default keyboard/mouse arrangements, even left-handed, is reasonably doable.
I have the games now and am starting UU1. Are there FMVs in the game? because I'm getting a narration, music and a black screen before the main menu. Is this normal? Also, the music keeps interrupting the guy's speech in the opening narration so I can't hear him.

EDIT: never mind. its working though I can't do anything about music interruptions. it's also bleeding loud. And that mage guy by the window: he looks just like Mumm-Ra!

There are a few points where you will get cutscenes, mainly in the form of dream-sendings while you sleep (and in UW2's case, the occasional taunt by the Guardian when discovering something).

I'm not sure if you can do anything about the music via DOSBox settings (although if you're getting random sound effects while walking around, search the forum for a thread about changing the configuration to use Sound Blaster or General Midi rather than Roland), but all of the relevant events should also have subtitles.
I have since added mouselook to UW1 and UW2 with my UltimaHacks patches, which you can apply to the GOG version of the game:

https://github.com/JohnGlassmyer/UltimaHacks

Separately, another person has been working on a project to sort-of convert UW1 and UW2 to run in the modern Unity engine, which has mouselook:

https://github.com/hankmorgan/UnderworldExporter

I figured I should update this older thread for the benefit of people who come here from web searches.

How do I install this patch? The master is just the source code and I don't have any compilers like mono or such on windows. I don't see any executable or release version on the Github page.

EDIT: Scratch that. Instead, how do I build the patched game folder to a replacement game.gog image? There's no instructions on how to do that.

EDIT 2: Scratch that too, here's the issue I really need help with: HOW DO I RESTORE THE CURSOR KEYS FOR MOVEMENT? I fucking hate WSAD.

Hi Pocococo, I applied your hack but it seems that the keys you've assigned are hardcorded or something? I tried to rebind them with AutoHotKey without success. Is there any way you can let us know how to rebind your keys? I am an ESDF player so ideally I'd like to be able to rebind the keys you've assigned.

Hi everyone,

I can't seem to get the Ultima Hacks patch from
https://github.com/JohnGlassmyer/UltimaHacks]https://github.com/JohnGlassmyer/UltimaHacks]https://github.com/JohnGlassmyer/UltimaHacks to work with the GOG version of Ultima Underworld I.

I have patched the game using the online patcher provided at the link I shared above, then replaced the original executable with the patched one. Just as mentioned in the instructions on the site.

The site provides the following instructions for the GOG version of the game:

"Note that if you intend to patch a GOG.com installation of Ultima Underworld or Ultima Underworld II that uses an ISO CD image (game.gog), then the executable file you need to patch is contained within that CD image. In that case, you can either

extract the contents of the game.gog image to a directory using a program such as 7-Zip, and then edit DOSBox's configuration to have it mount that directory as the CD-ROM drive in place of the game.gog image, or

extract the contents of game.gog, patch the executable, and then build a new game.gog ISO with the patched executable included"

However I can't seem to recreate a game.gog image (tried with 7zip or an iso maker) that works with the GOG provided dosbox. Dosbox starts up but when I try to launch the game it just closes back down.

I also don't have any idea how to get the GOG provided Dosbox to point at the folder in which I unpacked the original game.gog (this folder is where the patched executable is located) instead of it trying to look for a game.gog image.

If anyone has any ideas, please help.

Thank you!

Hi,

The file "dosboxULTIMA1_single.conf" should be in your "Ultima Underworld 1" folder.

Since you said you extracted the "game.gog" iso to a directory you can use it to run your game.
You will need to edit ".conf" file to comment out (with a #) the imgmount command so it will not run the game.gog iso.
Next add the mount command (mount d "..\location_of_your_extracted_game" -t cdrom) to use your extracted directory.

This is an example of mine. (I extracted game.gog with 7zip into a folder called game in the same directory)

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
cls
mount C "..\Ultima Underworld 1"
#imgmount d "..\game.gog" -t iso -fs iso
mount d "..\game" -t cdrom
d:
cls
uw.bat
exit

I hope this helps.
