Last time I tried to play this on a non-Glide machine (GeForce 4 I think it was) on XP, it was a complete disaster. The last unofficial patch I have is from 2001... Has anything been done to this game to improve performance/compatibility with D3D hardware and modern OS for the GoG release?

From what I know the GOG version comes bundled with Nglide which is a 3dfx wrapper and I believe their version is patched with the last known update which was 1.19f or something like that which had a direct 3d fix added but the downside is the game has to run at around 30 fps or you get the floating rune bug so if you don't run with the 3dfx wrapper you would need to lock your frame rate to avoid the issue.

Edit: Yup I was right they did patch it to 1.19f http://www.gog.com/forum/ultima_series/ultima_ix_what_has_gog_fixed/post2

There is also an advanced fix (call it 1.19g) at Forgotten World, along with some mods. Ultima: The Reconstruction also has some links to other mods, both for U9 as well as all the rest of the Ultimas.
None of this, none of these suggestions work, whatsoever. The updates patches do nothing with the video settings, they are only gameplay based patches. With GOG version I cannot even get the game to run in D3D mode, and in Glide mode which is the only one that works, 16:9 resolutions look stretched. I cannot get the aspect ratio to look correct in widescreen.

To "fix" Direct 3D mode use this!
