Is the version here on GOG updated at all or is it still a buggy mess?

Like all classic games it is updated to the latest official version. I'll let others decide whether that's a properly fixed game or still a "buggy mess". There are also unofficial patches which you can apply, but they are not part of the GOG package.

Actually, I think they patched it up to the first unofficial release from the alleged "Origin employee". 1.19f or something.
