I contacted GOG support but they've said "sorry can't help" so am trying here.

After hundreds of hours of play, now when I select "Journey Onward" it won't load my game and says "No Party Formed".

I've looked everywhere but can't find any posts on how to fix this. Any ideas or links? I'm using a Mac.

Cheers, Grae

For Ultima IV, the game is saved in two files, party.sav and monsters.sav for the party information, and details of spawned monsters respectively. I'd suggest the following line of experiments:
1) Locate the actual folder that contains the game files. I know Mac packages up everything, but a quick websearch should show you how to navigate Finder to the actual files of the game.
2) See if there's a party.sav and/or monsters.sav file present, and if so back them up to some other folder
3) Try initiating a new game, which will create new files.
4) Quit the game, and try copying the party.sav file back over the new one, and see if that resolves the problem.

Good luck.

Thanks. I think that must be my problem, when I search my Mac there is no party.sav or monsters.sav file. The only reference I can find to party.sav is inside the GalaxyClient.log file, which says:

"2020-06-01 12:50:46.236 [Information][SubSystem installer thread (66)] [TID 0x70000c916000][galaxy_client]: Moving '/Applications/Ultima™ 4 Quest of the Avatar.app/Contents/Resources/game/PARTY.SAV.relocated' to '/Applications/Ultima™ 4 Quest of the Avatar.app/Contents/Resources/game/PARTY.SAV'."

But these folders don't show in the Applications folder, only the Ultima IV application itself. So I'm a little confused...

Sounds like some kind of failure of the GOG cloud save functionality, overwriting your local save with a blank cloud save file. That being the case, the only remaining thing I can think is to check in your Trash, see if the missing party.sav file is there; if so, it could possibly be restored.

Other than that, if you do decide to restart playing Ultima IV from scratch, ScummVM is currently in testing, with daily builds, for support of three Ultima games.. Ultima IV, Ultima VI, and Ultima VIII. Ultima IV support is based on the xu4 project, and allows playing Ultima IV with an enhanced VGA graphics tileset. The more testers to put it through it's paces, the better.
yeh not in the Trash unfortunately. All gone :(
GOG support weren't any help, they just said "nothing we can do, thanks for the feedback". No way I'm starting another game with GOG, but might try ScummVM thanks for the tip.
