I had lots of fun exploring the island of Buccaneers den. I walk/swam the entire perimeter and found a secluded cove with a pirate ship, and some caves with pirates talking about extracting venom from the silver serpent. I get the feeling I stumbled onto something that comes later in the game and I'm not supposed to be here yet.

This is my first visit to Buccaneers Den. II haven't gone to New Magnicia yet. Is it safe to explore the serpent cave or should I wait for the game to direct me there?

Did you talk to kimberlea back at the cathedral? She would have told you about the shortage of serpentwyne which is directly linked to the Silver serpent you have just found.

The Silver serpent is a side quest that you can come back to later. You can also do it now for a little karma boost.

Yes, I did talk to somebody in the catheral and heard about the shortage of serpent wine.

Here is the reason I thought maybe I found it to soon. I explored the serpent cave, found a bunch of bottles of serpentwyne, fought with some pirates and eventually found the silver serpent surrounded by a force field on a platform on the cove wall.

I thought maybe I was supposed to find this after I got a dispel field spell or something.

Do I need to somehow free the serpent from the force field?

yes, you do.

one of the pirates up top should have dropped a key when you killed him. pick it up and then touch the base of the platform the serpent is sitting on. the serpent will be released and will teleport himself back to Britain.

you might want to hold off on this for a little while though--the shopkeeper at the guildhouse won't do business with you after you release the serpent. he has some interesting stuff that you should at least have a look at. you won't be able to even enter the guildhouse until after you are done with shrines 4 & 5.
