I noticed shorty after arriving in Buccaneers Den for the first time that I had lost some mana.

I restored prior saves and pinpointed the exact moment it happened. Just before talking to Raven on the docks of Britain I had 63 mana. Just after the cut scene showing our arrival in Buccaneers Den, I checked mana again and it was 58.

I'm aware that mana is tied to a karma system, so maybe dealing with pirates is not virtuous but it feels strange because the game has basically left no other path forward (that I can see) other than taking Raven up on her offer.

Is this normal?

Thanks much for any insights anyone may have.

that is actually a new one to me!!

as far as dealing with the pirates, you have to do so in order to progress in the game so i doubt that has anything to do with it.

are you sure you might not mean "karma" instead of "mana" because your karma can indeed drop from doing bad things. the good news is that it's still very early in the game so you have plenty of time to make up for it. i can't think of anything that would take away mana--other than casting spells, of course! i will have to go back and re-read my manuals and see if i can help you out on this one.

do you remember if you did along the way that might have been considered uncool?

hey wait, i just thought of something!!

did you cast a spell with sustained action, like "light"? a spell like that will usually keep going either it just decides to fizzle out (which happens sometimes for reasons unknown) or until you are out of mana.

the only spell in the 1st circle that does that is light but you also use mana casting from scrolls. did you find another ethereal sight scroll?

I definitely mean mana. The women on the way to paws advised that doing good things or bad things will affect your abilities, suggesting to me that karma can affect mana. And, I've observed my mana go up after doing a good thing (it's accompanied by a pleasant sound).

In this case, I checked the mana just before talking to Raven (which initiated the transport to Bucanners Den) and just the
conversation with Raven ended (upon arrival in the Den). So there was no opportunity for me to have done something bad other than talk to Raven.

I didn't have the light spell active at the time.

Sounds like there is nothing I can do about it in any event I was just curious if this was a known issue.

Thanks for the reply!

No, I didn't have the light spell active at the time. I've also rested in a bed since then and my mana will now only restore to 58 (previously 63), so it definitely seems like my max mana was reduced.

I haven't found another ethereal sight scroll but I kept the one I had for when I can bind 2nd circle spells.

OH MY GOD I TOTALLY FORGOT!!

The Kiran Shield!! Did you take it with you when you left Despise? The Kiran Shield gives you a little mana boost (5 points to be exact) but only while you have it equipped.

Did you put it in your backpack? What weapon do you currently have readied?

Thanks for the additional brain storming!

Yes, I did take the Kiran shield. At the time when I noticed the mana drop (and presently) I had the Kiran shield and the flame sword readied. Since I had the Kiran shield readied before talking to Raven (mana 63) and after talking to Raven (mana 58) it doesn't seem like the shield is related to the drop.

I made a short video clip of the mana change happening.

hmmmmmmm......well that is very strange! i honestly can't think of any other possibilities. it could be just a bug in the program.

i'll think on it some more.......

Thanks for taking a look. It sounds like it's not something that typically happens when following doing things the game forces you to do, and that's helpful to know.

Thanks!
i do have 1 more *possible* explanation.

Did you kill Ooli/Iolo in despise?

killing companions (even if they have been corrupted into wyrmguards) will result is a 5 point karma hit.
