Do dropped items stay in the game world ? Or do they disappear after a while ?

Judging by how some items i dropped in Britain at the beginning of the game are still there after returning a good while later, it does appear that they persist. Yay.

Well .. looks like there is a big caveat.

An item i dropped on the floor near me just fell out of the level.
I guess this is not so safe after all.

Sigh.
