Are there any pro tips for using this spell

I found this on Ultima Codex

But that doesn't come anywhere close to my experience. Almost all terrain produces a black pearl when I cast this spell.

For example, I stood waist deep in a swamp in paws and cast the spell a dozen or so times. Black peal every time.

I found one patch of what looks like grass next to the swap that is giving me some variety (spider silk, garlic, ginseng) but oddly all other "grass" (which looks the same) produces only black pearls.

that was one thing i never figured out. i think it might have been one of the known issues with the game. are you trying to get something in particular? there are lots of *most* reagents lying all around in random places. the only one that you might need extra help with is nightshade. to find that in the wild, you will need to cast ethereal sight and even then, you will need to be in a swampy area--like paws. elena in minoc sells the widest variety of reagents. i think she has everything but nightshade. what point are you in the game?

killing certain creatures will give you some reagents too. for instance, killing giant spiders will give you spider silk. hellhounds will give you ash. icehounds will give ginseng.

In the 1.19f version of Ultima IX, this spell does not function correctly. Effectively, every time this spell is cast, a black pearl rises from the ground irrespective of the terrain. In addition, the game often crashes immediately following this event.

yours is patched to 1.19h isn't it?

Thanks for the info. I've got plenty of everything except for Mandrake and Nightshade which I'm out of.

I'm in Britain, just arriving from Moonglow. I was going to try to get all my scrolls into my spell book before heading to yew but the lack or reagents looks like it's going to prevent that.

Whoops, I missed that, thanks. I'm patched to 1.19h but I bet this explains it.

I guess I'm lucky I found that one random spot of grass by paws that drops a few other reagents (and no crashes).
