It will work in windowed mode but when I do fullscreen the game, it just refuses to play. Is there a way to make it work?

First you could try to reconfigure the graphics mode for the game.

If that did not work, then you can modify the file dosboxULTIMA7.conf file (in game installation directory). There is some settings which could help:

fullresolution=
there you may try to define the fullscreen resolution to use. Try 0 (number zero), or your native desktop resolution, or 640x480, or... Play around with different resolutions
output=
this defines what device is used to output game graphics. You should try to play with different output devices. possible choices are listed on the configuration file itself. ddraw could be good choice

Thanks for the suggestions, setting the output to ddraw seems to have fixed the problem.

I just wanted to add that changing to ddraw fixed the problem for me as well.

How do you modify the .conf file as stated above? What is ddraw? I found the .conf file but my computer doesn't know how to open it.

Any dumbed down, simplified advice would be of great help.

EDIT: I found the "graphic mode setup" application which I can open and change to DDraw, but the buttons below to save or play the game don't work - it says there's no game installed. I have the game installed clearly, but when I launch it I just get the audio and my screen goes black. I just want to figure out how to play, full screen or not.

You must launch the graphic mode setup tool from the Start Menu. Launching it from the game folder will not work.
