This is actually a two part question.

Part 1

When it get's dark, wow, it get's really dark and the UI controls are dark, and I can barely find a torch or bedroll in my pack, and that's when there are only a few items in it.

I'm guessing this is just the way the game is, but wanted to double check? I've pretty much been deploying a never-let-it-get-dark strategy as a result.

Part 2

Twice I've managed to get a torch into somebodies hand, lit the torch (flames appeared on it), and it had zero impact on visibility. Is that normal? Is there a different non-magic option that actually works?

The light spell seems to produce light but I like having other options that don't use mana.

Thanks much for any advice anyone has!

Yes, everything goes dark without a light source. I usually organise torches on the same character to make them easy to find. If a character carrying a lit light source is on your screen, it is lit up. I have never seen this not work.

You can also put a light source on the ground if your want everyone to hold other things during combat.

Hang in there with torches and light spells; you'll find a certain type of weapon that also functions as a light source.
Thanks for the advice guys!

Just to confirm, the process to ignite a torch is to put it in a character empty hand and double click the torch, right?
Yes, that is the typical method.
