This is just a minor rant so if you're not inclined to read my moaning then move along now. Nothing to see here.

The lack of frame limiting in U7 means that even under DosBox the animations run way too fast even when you have the CPU cycles set to a reasonable rate to play the game. Changing the cycles doesn't really have a lot of impact on animation speeds and setting it too low just makes the whole game sluggish and less responsive than normal.

So I try Exult. It's fairly good and the UI improvements are very welcome, but since development on the project has slowed to pretty much be in purgatory the problems that exist in Exult aren't likely to be fixed any time soon, if ever. I've learned that at least on my system, Exult will crash sometime between the 3rd and 4th hour of playing so I'm forced to break up play sessions to prevent these or risk losing progress. I only learned this after having lost most of my progress several times over. Yea. I'm bad at remembering to save often. I get caught up in things.

Anyway. I'm just surprised that a fan patch for U7 hasn't been made that includes a frame limiter at the very least. Bug fixes would be nice, too. I'm not asking for much here.

So that's all. I'm finished whining now. Carry on.
You do make some good points. As much as I love the game, I have to agree.
Yes, I totally agree, it really sucks that there is no other way to play the game. Under dosbox it's either too slow or too fast, there is no way to play it without either lightning-speed animations or terribly sluggish gameplay. Exult is fine and in my case it works totally stable. I especially like the possibility to use the enhanced music tracks by JD Harding. The core gameplay works, but sadly there are still some "aesthetic" details that don't: The smith's schedule in Minoc for example or the light-system. That's especially lamentable as Ultima VII shines exactly with such details...
