I had no idea how to play before reading guides and I spent my first points on melee i am level 4 I got 3 points can i still go mage? Thanks

It's not too late. There is a quest in the "Isle of Fre" expansion which will max your stats, so training is fairly optional.
Bear in mind that a combat mage is not very practical in this game. There is another thread discussing the issues
here
Magic is still highly useful for a lot of general activities though.
