Having a lot of trouble with spell casting. I have the spell book and I've purchased two spells. When I open the spell book though, I only seem to have access to linear spells, and there doesn't seem to be any way to turn the page.

I'm also unsure about what each stat does. Can someone just give me a quick rundown of what each one influences?
Except for linear (level 0) spells, having it in your book doesn't mean much. Spells require two additional things; reagents and levels. If you're first level, you can't cast a second level spell...

As for stats, strength impacts your health points, dexterity your ability to hit your enemy and dodge his attacks, and intelligence your mana and ability to cast spells.

If I'm wrong on any of this, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to correct me.
I know reagents and levels are required. Avatar is level 5 (though I haven't done any training yet) and I'm carrying around a bunch of reagents with me, though they may not be the right ones. My problem is that I don't even know where the non-linear spells are. How do you select the purchased spells? Are they in the spellbook after you buy them? If so, how do you get to the page they're on?

What do the other two stats, combat and magic do? Does strength and intelligence influence them? Does dexterity have any impact on lockpicking ability? Since Avatar is the only one who can cast spells, is it pointless to raise anyone else's intelligence?

To get to the other spell levels, click on the upper-right or upper-left corners of whatever page you're currently on (right where the page curls a little bit).

Regarding the various stats - Here's what they do, from the Ultima 7 wiki:

Combat: Improves the hit rate of characters. Derived from Dexterity, but can be individually boosted.
Dexterity: Increases speed (walking and attacking) and helps with lock picking.
Intelligence: Boosts the effectiveness of spells. Applies only to the Avatar.
Magic: Determines the number of mana points a character has. This stat is only applicable to the Avatar; the companions can't build it at all. Derived from Intelligence, but can be individually boosted.
Strength: Affects how much a player can hold and may increase damage. Affects the number of Hit Points a character has.
Training Points: As characters gain levels, they gain Training Points. Trainers consume 1-3 of these during a given training session.
Thanks, that was very helpful!
