Just started the game (GOG version), and walked into the storm that swaps out my items from Lord British for "strange items". I found Shamino, he gave me a list of the strange items and we found his bow and he observed that if we find out where the rest of the strange items came from we may find our other missing items.

Is there any harm in dumping the strange items that don't have utility and just use the list from Shamino? Seems like that should be okay but thought I'd ask as I'd hate to make a blunder this early in the game.

Thanks much for any advice anyone may have.

Yeah, you can basically drop all the strange items right away. They're basically hints to where your items are, and you can ask NPCs about them, but it's not necessary. (I always put them in a separate bag and keep them with me, even though I've had so many playthroughs now that I know where the items are anyway.)
All the items that have been taken from you are in the game world from the start (technically they're just duplicates), and always in the same location, so you can find them anyway.

In short, you can't muck anything up here.

Gotcha: you sure about this? IIRC, you need at least some of that junk to be able to EXCHANGE them for the items you are missing as of yet?
I think you're right: I forgot about Alyssand's ring. You'll have to return the ring to her to initiate a major plot point.
Thanks for the heads up!
So yeah, 6502, don't drop that ring.

But other than that, there's nothing important. You can sometimes exchange items, but none are required to progress in the story.
Edit: And keep that fancy blue armour yourself: No need to give it back. Defense is on par with plate, while also a lot lighter, and no warmth penalty (nor a bonus). (You'll find out about warmth eventually.)
