I'm running the GOG version (no patches).

Does the memory leak bug in Black Gate that could eat inventory items exist in SI?

I feel like I just ran into it but wanted to confirm.

I'm working on the Goblin quest, talked to Simon, killed his Goblin form, took 3 keys from him put them in a bag with nothing else in it, went to the forest to do some grinding before going down the Goblin stairs, filled up several characters inventory, went back to Monitor to sell stuff and by the time I got back to the forest again I noticed there were only two keys in the bag.

I'm not too concerned figuring I can use hack mover on whatever door the missing key is for, but would be good to know if this sounds like a known bug.

Thanks!

Weird. I don't remember losing any keys or other items like that in either game. Are you sure you didn't misplace the key somewhere?

By the way, on the topic of keeping track of keys, i strongly suggest that you start exploring the Silver Seed expansion part of the game before going much further through the main quest; not necessarily to play all the way through the Silver Seed quest, but rather because one of the first characters you meet in Silver Seed will give you something that should come in handy throughout the rest of the main game. You trigger Silver Seed by using the Serpent Amulet near a Serpent Gate, if i remember correctly. And there is a Serpent Gate in the catacombs of Monitor, iirc.

ed: should have said Amulet of Balance, not Serpent Amulet. oops.

I am 99% sure I didn't loose the key. I put all 3 keys in a bag by themself and I didn't even open the bag between the time Simon gave me the keys and the time I entered the Goblin cave. I had no reason to open the bag before I got there since that was all that was in the bag.

Thanks for the tip about Silver Seed!
Did you pick this bag up from the ground after a teleport storm put it there?

I recall random generated containers being very buggy in The Black Gate, e.g. bags you pick up from a slain enemy's inventory. The first time I played the game (loooong ago) I definitely lost keys.

I'm not aware this problem also being present in Serpent Isle though.

I hope you at least still have the important key. Two of his keys are useless, while the third opens up the cave. If you lost that one, you'll have to 'hack move' the door away.

And as pocococo stated, go to the expansion asap, talk to the metal guy, and he'll give you a key ring. You don't have to play the rest of the expansion just yet (in fact, the expansion is quite hard so maybe it's wise to wait), but at least you'll have this handy tool with you right from the start.

No the bag didn't come from a teleport storm. My bags have all come from stealing them from NPCs houses or they are bags my characters started with (if they started with any).

Good to know two of the keys are useless! I was able to open the door in the Goblin cave so it sounds like everything is okay.

Many thanks to you and pocococo for the info about about the Silver Seed. I knew the keyring was part of it but I didn't know it was easy to get at the start. I'm trying to playing things in a natural order and it doesn't feel like it's the right time to do all of Silver Seed, but I will definitely dart in quick to get the keyring.

It's probably Iolo who's stealing them. He always does that in my game. That naughty old man.

heh. I generally follow the virtues, until it becomes inconvenient (like the provisioner in Monitor where the game starts not selling bags) :-)

I suppose the true test of the Avatar is to remain virtuous even when it is hard, and I fail that test.

Or you could take the speedrunner mindest, and do very non-Avatar-ish stuff because it's faster, but being just virtuous enough to complete the game. (For example, in Ultima 6 the speedrun involves lying to a child to get one of the runes without permission, and I believe there's a rune obtained by killing an innocent person.)

Ultima 4 NES's speedrun route gets rather silly; you cheat the reagent seller to get tons of reagents early, and then make up the lost virtue later. It turns out that this is much faster than trying to get the money to buy the reagents you need or trying to do without, particularly since money is much harder to get in the NES version.

Is that virtuous?!

Who cares, as long as you have enough karma to beat the game?

Edit: I don't think either Ultima 7 has any sort of karma requirement, but I'm not as familiar with these games as much as I am with earlier games in the series.

Nope, there's no karma or anything like it. You can basically steal everything there is to steal, murder everything there is to murder (although it'd be wise not to kill plot-critical individuals, but you can at least resurrect them in TBG).
To be honest, it's a bit silly, but oh well.

The only downside is your companions leaving or even fighting you if you go out of control.
In The Black Gate, your party members can complain and leave if you steal too much. Of course, you can just make them do the stealing by moving the items into their inventory. That way they can’t complain since they’re the thieves!

In Serpent Isle they stopped caring about the Avatar’s crimes.

I'm starting to want to mod a reputation system into U7. Steal or kill too much, people summon the guards on sight and maybe even send the army after you. It is supposed to be a role-playing game, isn't it?
