I'm playing the GOG version (no patches).

I read this on ultima.fandom.com

"All of the ghosts in the game are the Chaos Hierophant. Talking to him before the right time is there will result in plot-stoppers.

I just found the Chaos Hierophant and I am wondering if I am yet at the "right time" to talk to him.

Here is where I'm at in the game:

*Goblin King killed
*Fawn trial done
*I'm working on getting Captain Hawk out of Bull Tower so I can go to Moonshade. A woman at the Sleeping Bill Inn took me on a quest to the lighthouse to get treasure. On the way there I saw some ruins and talked to the Chaos Hierophant.

I didn't save the game after talking to him, so if this is the "right time" I'll just go back.

Also, I noticed there are two ghosts in the ruins and both are the Chaos Hierophant and have the same dialog. Each one gives me what appears to be the same scroll. Should I talk to one or both of them?

Thanks much for any advice anyone has!

Revert to an earlier save: this is the exact spot the description was on about: you have talked to some ghost and NOT the Hierophant and thus triggered the plot stopper right there an then. Just avoid to talk to ghosts. Period.

The explanation is a bit misleading as I just noticed...

Attached is a screenshot of what the Hierophant scene and sprite looks like

Thanks for the screenshot!

I have only see the Hierophant dialog once - at the ruins near the lighthouse.

I already restored prior to a save prior to talking to the ghost that triggered that dialog.

Is there anything else I need to do?

Thanks for your help!

Then you're good: just carry on. It is the talking (to the "Hierophant") that triggers the bug.
The bug isn't actually a game stopper though? To my knowledge anyway. You can just continue as normal.
It's just weird to run into it, due to not having a single clue about what's going on at this point in the game.

Hmm, dunno to be honest. I never tried running into the bug, so i can't tell. I was relying on the UltimaCodex, that lists the ghost/Hierophant bug under "plotstoppers"
It's been a while since I've played vanilla Ultima 7 (I prefer Exult these days), but never got stuck, even after speaking with the ghosts. I'm fairly sure the UltimaCodex is wrong here.

And he only gives you instructions for opening the wall of light anyway, so even if you couldn't talk with the real Chaos Hierophant (which you still can), you can go on with the game as normal.

The only big problem is that players will be utterly confused to what is going on. Barely starting the game and basically be presented with a huge and confusing spoiler.
Thanks guys!

Phew! I lucked out on this one.

No worries; I'm sure it'd have been fine either way, it's just weird. ;)
