I just encountered a softlock of sorts in the Sega Master System version of Ultima 4. In dungeon Shame, there is a room on the first floor that has 2 reapers in it, a few other enemies, and some poison fields in the middle. There is a secret exit to the north that leads to another room, but which ultimately is a dead end (this is important).

The problem comes when I try to leave after reaching that dead end. My solo character starts the fight on a wall tile, from which she can't attack, as the game thinks I'm trying to fire through the wall if I try. I can't move out of the wall, as there is a reaper there which does not move. Tremmor [sic] did not work on the Reaper, and what if I didn't have access to the spell?

The only ways out I can see are as follows:
* Casting Xit, Up, or Down, but what if I couldn't use those spells?
* Dying on purpose. This can be tedious; while there is an orb to help it along, there's only one, and no way to get it to respawn.

So, while it is possible to escape, this situation certainly feels like a softlock.

Out of curiosity, does this issue exist in the DOS version of the game?

I have been working at finding and fixing bugs in the original DOS version, so this piqued my interest. I went and checked the room and secret entrance in question. However, though there was a Reaper blocking my path, I was able to kill him with regular attacks.
So perhaps this was a bug introduced in the Sega version due to a difference in how attacks from within walls are handled. In the DOS version they proceed normally.
So this issue does not exist in the DOS version.
