Hi,

For some reason whenever I try to meditate at the shrines I get a message saying something along the lines that my mind is not clear and I get kicked out of the shrine. Even when Hawkwind tells me I'm ready to be elevated in a certain virtue I still can't meditate. Any advice?

Sounds like you are not using the correct mantra for that shrine.

Did you spell out the virtue completely? I mean not just "sacr", but the full word "sacrifice". Usually when talking to NPCs it's enough to write the first four letters, but shrines require the full word.

You can also only meditate so frequently. If you've meditated recently, the game won't let you keep meditating over and over again until sufficient time (number of steps) has passed.
