Hi,

I love Ultima 1, the graphics are nice, the gameplay awesome :D
but whats with Ultima 2? The Player-creation-screen is... well... strange and the game runs only in CGA (?)... -.-' is it possible to play it in EGA like Ultima 1?
Official Ultima Ii is only on CGA. But there is unofficial patch available which upgrades in to 16-color EGA.

Yeah sadly as the post above me said the game officially runs in CGA so if you want apply a EGA patch I would recommend the ultima patcher, http://www.ultimaaiera.com/ultima1/pixs-ultima-patcher/ , which can apply fixes to any Ultima game and you don't have to worry about playing around with Dosbox to apply the fixes and upgrades, well outside of the newest Exodus graphic and music patch which adds VGA and composite CGA graphics on top of EGA and default 4 colour CGA since the patcher program doesn't have that one, just the old midi and EGA patch.

Now I would also like to point out both it(Ultima 2 and Exodus) were intended to make use of the colour "smudging" of composite video monitors to turn the 4 basic colours of the CGA colour pallet into 16 sadly while Dosbox does have a feature that allows most CGA games to have their intended Composite CGA colour pallet, Ultima 2 and 3 are not supported.

But you can see what Ultima 2 is supposed to look like here if your intrested

The Ultima 1 included with the trilogy is actually a remake although it's the first version that made it to PC. It was done well after Ultima 3 which is why Ultima 2 is technically a step down. The EGA patch will get the graphics up to roughly the same level.

Not that it helps with Ultima 2 but if you make it to number 3, the patcher above does include the VGA/composite CGA version of the U3 patch. It was actually added within hours of it's release as the author was helpful enough to supply a pre-release version to get it prepared in advance.

What he said, you can get said patch here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ultima-exodus/

you just may have to move the game's directory to your c drive then boot up dosbox and run the patch installer and then move the directory back to where you had gog installer put it(pending of course you had the GOG installer place it somewhere in c:\program files\ ) it also adds the music missing from the Dos version but was in the other ports i.e. Apple 2, Commodore 64/128, Amiga, ect.

I do personally like it in the composite mode mainly because that's how I played the game when it first came out on a old Tandy 1000 with a composite monitor.
