I'm playing Ultima Underworld and I'm at the end of the game, I made almost everithing, beated Tyball and I should open the big gate at level 8, but apparently I must go into the jail in level 7 of the trolls but I mistakenly killed the one that shoud free me. What can I do? Is there a way to end the game somehow?

some day i'd like to mod a cheat / debug menu into Underworld (UW1 and UW2) to empower people to repair bad game states like this. but i wonder, what facilities would help in such an instance? toggle a flag? bring a character back to life? initiate conversation with a given character?

maybe supporting a larger number of save states / slots / files would help too, to give people more states to go back to and try again.

There are multiple ways through and around level 7, some of which use secret doors, so you should be able to enter the jail from the back door if necessary (the way you got out when you came through the first time).

If you killed the entire checkpoint, at least one of the guards there should have dropped a key that will open both portcullises which formed the "trap" they used to try and extort you on your first trip. If you've already unlocked those two portcullises, then it doesn't matter whether the guard post is dead or not.

You're after three cells in the jail that you wouldn't have been able to open on your first trip through there (assuming you went through level 7 the "normal" way). You need one of the keys that Tyball dropped in order to unlock the massive doors. I think it was the imp head key; keep this key on you for the rest of the game.

Assuming I remember correctly, Tyball drops two keys, and the other key is a copy of the key used to open those two portcullises (the guards in that guard post don't have the only copy).

If this doesn't work for you, let me know where you are and what you did on your first trip through and I'll try to give you a route you can use.

Lava boots help to enter back through the rear path (top left-hand corner of this map here: https://www.sircabirus.com/uw1walk_level7.php).

If you have the telekinesis spell, you should be able to loot any keys from the troll that you killed from far away.

If you never escaped the jail, then you need to figure out a way to escape. Open all of the doors that you are able to (any door that is not "massive" you can open by attacking enough times, and talk to each of the prisoners. You'll eventually be able to talk to a prisoner who can show you the way out. Once you escape, you can go in and out of the prison after unlocking the portcullis using the key, and you can access the massive doors by using the key that you got from killing Tyball.

You may be "closer" to the end of the game, but there are quite a few quests that you need to complete after you kill Tyball. Enjoy!

What I didn't figure out is that you can actually unlock portcullises with keys, I never thought that because there isn't a lock ^^
Btw thanks to you I was able to proceed and finish the game. What can I say? Absolute masterpiece!
And of course thanks to all that answered to my problem ;D

How did you escape the tomb of the ex-knight? Or did you not discover it? (He was expelled from the order for killing another member in cold blood)

I just checked from an old save and it's on level 5 in the SE corner of the map. In the maze-ish area that is up a ramp from the friendly ghouls (the other exit of that maze-ish area leads to a ledge above the big lava room with Judy), a tunnel deadends at a room with an open portcullis and a lever just outside it. If you go inside, the portcullis shuts and locks, and a dire ghost attacks you. There's another door in there that leads to a tiny room with a gravestone and some items (don't forget to check behind the grave). There are signs there telling you about this area, including a "do not enter unless you want to die", and another sign inside that talks about "Here lies Nolant, formerly sir, who was kicked from the order for killing young Endicott in cold blood" (paraphrased).

The dire ghost drops a key that unlocks the portcullis. I was wondering if you found this room, and if you did, how you got out without using the key on the portcullis. There are a few different ways to do it, but they involve things like Gate Travel or the Silver Tree.

Ok, I definitely have visited that tomb, but I don't remember how I exit, is it possible to open that portillicus without the key?

Sure, but not through the portcullis itself. I don't think there are any physical exits besides through that gate. The switch that is outside the room is around a bend, so you can't see it. Therefore you can't use a pole or a Telekinesis effect to use it.

Ways out:
1) Use the key that the ghost drops. This is probably the most obvious way, and the ghost dropping the key and the portcullis saying it is locked if you try to open it lead to the obvious "use key on portcullis".

2) Use a lockpick on the portcullis. I think you can pick a portcullis, though I haven't bothered with lockpicking in so long that I don't recall trying it.

3) Kill yourself. Starvation is the easiest, but throwing yourself at the walls to take damage should work too. Avoiding a game over requires having replanted the Silver Seed somewhere outside that room, but I figure that's likely anyway.

4) Use a Gate Travel spell or scroll. This requires that the moonstone be placed somewhere outside the room.

It is entirely possible that you used the key that time, and then forgot that it can be done by the time you hit level 7 later in the game, and possibly days or weeks later in Real Life.

So at 99% I did 1) and I forgot as you said, probably there has been even months between the two moment, the 1% is for the option 2). Thank you again :D
