As far as I know, that is the only non-magical way to do so. Sleeping only heals a few HP, if you're lucky, and a lot of times none at all. Potions/spells are much faster.

so i guess you die a lot in the beggining. almost all the monsters i face are way too tough for me, they kill my whole party in no time.

I guess what you do is, you look for a dungeon to explore, and once you've found a dungeon, you use it to level up, but in the meantime you just explore the city's and talk to people, and when your out in the wild, you avoid encounters with monsters and sleep through the night, praying nothing attacks you?

basically, just a bit of warning if you go to a town and it says their is a air of Hatred, Cowardice or Falsehood there just leave and comeback some other time as a Shadowlord is hanging around and all the townies will be under their infulence so if the shadowlord of falsehood is there the townies will all lie, Cowardice they will all run from you, Hatred they will attack you on sight,

Also that weird blue guy that often shows up when your sleeping is lord british, he will give you a clue to your quest if your karma/vitue is high enough. Also go on replacement docs http://www.replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.959 and download the record of Lord British's expedition to the underworld(I added a link to the download) it was a piece of fluff that came in the gamebox that tied into the game and also gave you a clue to where one of the items you needed to finsh the game that wasn't included with the version on GOG

The appearances by Lord British while you're camping are also the means by which your party members level up, and doing so heals the character in question, IIRC.
what about sleeping at an inn? will that regain the hit points? there has to be a way! you don't
have enough gold when you start to get very far or buy that many potions!
and also: what happens when you die? do you lose stats or experiance?

ultima 6 has better graphics, but ultimatly, its looking like 5 and 6 are almost the same game aside from the extra detail in 6.

Yes sleeping at a inn will help as well, when you die you will lose EXP. Points(but I don't think it will cause you to drop in levels though) your brought to Lord british's castle becareful or the guards will haul you to jail for trespassing.

I started off with 60 hit points, and then after diying a couple of times i maxed out at only 30! whats the deal with that?
Was that in #5? I think it is possible to drop in levels there.

Healing is less of a hassle in U6 since you can visit LB at any time and ask him to heal you, and you have more control over a number of other things.

healing isn't nearly as hard in U5 as i thought, its just that after dying a couple times, i maxed out at 30 hit points. I kept resting in the wild and i would never go above 30, so i thought something was wrong but truth be told, i COULDNT raise my hit points any higher! lol. jeez.

Forgot 30 is the max for stats in Ultima 5, also while you do lose exp.(only 50 at most) and can drop levels your stats will remain unaffected. So if you max out your stats but say manage drop to all the way down to level 3 or 1 all your stats will stay at 30 so all that means you just have to raise your levels back up. The experiance drop is also based on Karma so the higher your Karma is the less exp you will lose if your die.

Also if I remember if your Karma gets too low Lord British will not resurrect you.

One last tip use the magic carpet which is found in the room which is locked by a magical lock at the very top of Castle British, you can grab a cannon and drag it up to the door and blow it open, just don't sleep in the room or else the door will reappear and you will be trapped, when storming Castle Blackthorn or else you can risk being caught by his guards and then things will get unpleasent as you will be placed in Blackthorns dungeon and he will interrogate you for the mantra's which if you give him he will then defile the shrine and you will lose Karma for, if you don't he will permanently kill a party member so it's best just to avoid getting caught all together and the Magic carpet allows you to do that as so long as your on it the guards can't bother you,so long as you don't interact with them.
