I have only played U4 on the PC (well I did start on the apple 2 but didn't finish it then) and loved it... Having found it here on GOG was a nice trip down memory lane.
I have yet to see any other RPG game like this one - I have played a few and read up a number of others but I have yet to see anything with the open game approach and the slant on becoming an avatar like in U4.
Only one thing I recall doing that I haven't seen elsewhere:
for nightshade which you find near Vesper, its in the poison patch so you'd get poisoned each time you search. I just waited for a monster to show up and lead them to the patch, fight them on the patch and leave the chest there. After that, you won't get poisoned at long as the chest is on the spot.
This is a great game and even now 35+ years later it holds its own with other RPG games.
