I was attempting to remove the force field from the shrine. I used the rune and recited the mantra when prompted. This seemed to get rid of the force field and I then tried to interact with the shrine in order for my characters to level up. Nothing I did allowed me to interact with the shrine. After trying a number of things, I did something, perhaps it was trying to Use the Shrine, I got a message saying the moonstone had been buried. A second teleportation portal appeared where I was standing. I went away to do some other things and came back later. After some time, the second portal disappeared and the force field return to the top of the shrine. I still could not interact with the shrine. Does anyone know what happened?

Weird, I don't remember seeing that behavior before.

I believe you're supposed to [T]alk to the shrine in order to interact with it. But you can only do that after grabbing the moonstone that is on top of the shrine.

Regarding unearthing and burying moonstones, I know you were able to do that in Ultima 5. Maybe you could do the same in Ultima VI? In which case, you might have grabbed a moonstone, and then used it on the ground near the shrine and buried it, causing a moongate to appear there. You may need to use a shovel in that location in order to get the moonstone back again.

Now that I type this out, I wonder if maybe the moonstone was still on the shrine when you tried to use it, and you might have tried to (U)se the moonstone, and then accidentally buried it?

After some experimentation and pondering, I realized you are correct. I managed to level up my characters at the shrine by talking to it and I remembered that I had picked the shrine up off the altar and then used it, which buried it. The proper phase of the moon was up for the new portal to appear, but the old one didn't disappear for a while. This has been confirmed by experience with the other shrines I liberated.

Thank you for your explanation.
