I've tried at least twice to start in Ultima 4, but I don't know any of the controls. Usually GOG is good about providing reference materials and I love them for that, but the Ultima Series seems a bit newbie-unfriendly and not having a reference card for Quest of The Avatar really doesn't help.

Can you guys help me fill that void? I really want to get into this series, it seems awesome!

You can find the manual , the spellbook [url=http://www.replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.955]here, the map , and the clue book [url=http://www.replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.4373]here. Have fun becoming the Avatar!
here's the controls, with a few exceptions here and there like descend is no longer needed in Ultima 5 instead you just use K for climb to go up and down and so on but for the most part these are mostly the same in Ultima's 1-5

A attack with readied weapon (must indicate direction of the attack)
B board vessel (or mount a horse)
C cast a magical spell (must be followed by the number of the player who wishes to cast it -- not needed in combat or in dungeon rooms -- and then the first letter of the desired spell)
D descend ladder to next level of dungeon or building
E enter villages, towns, castles, dungeons and shrines
F fire a ship's cannons after boarding (must indicate direction of attack)
G get chest (open and disarm, if trapped; must be followed by the number of the player who wishes to open the chest except during combat and in dungeon rooms)
H hole up and camp, recover from wounds
I ignite torch for illumination in dungeons (requires a special item)
J jimmy lock (use magical key to unlock a sealed door; must be followed by the direction of the door you wish to unlock)
K climb ladder to the next level of a building or dungeon
L locate position (requires a special item)
M mix reagents
N new order (exchanges the position of two players indicated within the party except for player #l)
O open door (must indicate direction)
P peer at gem (requires a special item)
Q quit and save
R equip player with weapon of choice (if owned)
S search current location for unusual items
T talk (allows player to converse with merchants or townsfolk in the direction indicated)
U use item
V volume (toggles sound effects on/off)
W wear armor
X exit current form of transportation, continue on foot
Y yell "giddyup" or "whoa" to speed up or slow down horse
Z ztats (displays status and attributes of a selected player; if 0 is pressed instead of a player number, displays lists of weapons, armor, items, reagents and mixtures)
