I'm playing Ultima I, and no matter what I do I always get the message "nothing" when I attack any opponent in Overland combat. I've tried lining up above, to the left, to the right and below enemies. Nothing works.

The best weapon I've gotten so far is a sword. I know. Not the best weapon, but I would think it should be enough to handle enemies in the early part of the game. During dungeon crawls the sword works great against rats, bats, skeletons, thieves and rangers. But when I exit the dungeon and attempt combat in Overland, I never, ever, ever get any message except "nothing". I never land a blow or inflict any damage. What am I missing here??

I'm very much enjoy the game so far (i.e. towns, castles, dungeons), but unless I can figure out how to make Overland combat work I'll have to give up.

Any help or tips will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

You have to be adjacent to the enemy you are attacking.

If you are using a ranged weapon (like a bow), you can attack up to 3 squares away.

Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry if this wasn't clear in my original post, but I am adjacent to enemies. I've tried placing my character above, below, to the left and to the right.

Any other suggestions?

You are pressing an arrow key after the A key, right? In the dungeon you are in first person mode and will automatically attack what is in front of you. On the overworld you are looking down from above and you have to specify which direction you are swinging/firing the weapon.
yup you have to use a movement key after the a for attack to set the direction you want to attack all other keys give teh nothing response you keep getting

Thanks!! No I was not pressing a direction key after pressing A. I must've missed this little tidbit of info in the game manual. Thanks for everyone's help!
