I've been playing through all the Ultimas chronologically. (Something I've dreamed of doing since I was a kid when the first Ultimas were released.) I'm now at Ultima VI. As I'm sure anyone doing the same thing has experienced, Ultima VI comes as a shock to the system! Even though there were many advances in Ultimas I through V, Ultima V is still basically the same as Ultima I. But Ultima VI changes everything, new graphics, new controls, new everything.
In the previous Ultimas I quite enjoyed descending into the dungeons level by level, gazing at a gem, and then mapping the level out on graph paper. I love this kind of external interaction that's really missing from modern games. However, in Ultima VI, this is just no longer possible. The size and the layout of the dungeons makes it nearly impossible to map them out on graph paper. It seems to me the only alternative is to try to move around using multiple gems and then try to draw the levels out freehand. But I am not at all good at this. My maps come out confusing and clumsy.
My question is has anyone found an easier way to map out the dungeons in Ultima VI. I'm talking about using paper and pencils, not making screen shots and pasting the images together (or, of course, finding them online). I like doing this the way it would have been done when these games were actually released.
