Ultima Underworld II does relate to the plot of Ultima 7. It takes place one year after The Black Gate and six months before The Serpent Isle. In addition to furthering the story of the Guardian (before all of the retcons struck in Ultima 9), it is also canonically where the Avatar obtains a particular item with which he begins The Serpent Isle. IIRC the actual acquisition was glitched so it didn't come up when it was supposed to in UW2 itself, but it is referred to in the "supply list" scroll that you start SI with.

Ahhh. Yeah I haven't played either of the UW games for more than making sure they ran well enough TO play later. I've read about the U7 link but I tend to forget it because UW1 was such a side game, just like the Worlds games were. (Doesn't mean they're bad games of course.)

Unlike the Worlds of Ultima games, UW1 *does* link to U7 -- but to explain would be a spoiler.

It does? Hmmm.... Well I guess I'd say skip the Worlds games unless you really liked U6 (like I did) or just want to play a couple non-Britannia Ultimas. The UW games are apparently linked... even if tenuously. :)
Speaking of the Worlds of Ultima games, it is worth mentioning that Nuvie will support those as well. I'm currently playing through Ultima 6 in Nuvie and the improved interface makes a huge difference. Even when I'm not using the new fullscreen mode the addition of drag&drop, being apple to move items without being adjacent, double-click support, being able to click words in dialogue and the introduction of container gumps are a real blessing.
