As far as I know you have to go into a castle and transact with the king. Your healing depends of the amount of gold you offered.

Also kill enemies in the dungeons, then leave the dungeon. You'll get some HP off that.

The safest way to recover HP is to offer Pence to a King.
The best way is to go into a dungeon, kill a few enemies, and return to the surface. The longer you stay underground and the more enemies you kill there, the more HP you'll recover once you get out.
