I read that in the original game that pressing crtl-S revealed the players values for all the virtues. I tried control-s (and control-shift-s) on my mac and all I got was "bad command" am I not doing it right or is this not supported?

That is definitely not supported. The only way to track your progress in the virtues is by talking to Hawkwind in Lord British's Castle.
Or, if you want to see the exact values use the savegame editor (see sticky thread), there is a version for OS X as well.

lol Okay, yeah, there's that too. But in game your only option is to talk to Hawkwind.
Thanks guys. Apparently it was a hack for development that was accidentally(?) left in the original game.
