Edit: Forgot to mention in the title that this is about UU1.

So after searching endlessly for the McGuffin I finally looked it up. Aha, I have to talk to a certain npc, on level 5, no problem. Eventually I stood on the exact spot where the character was supposed to be. There was none, however. Only a bunch of armor and a blood splatter. At this point I realized what I had done hours earlier, without event thinking about it. There were a few ghouls, I killed them all. I looked up the others ghouls' locations: blood splatters, some loot. I don't have a save from that far back, but I guess I deserve it. I usually take care not to attack non-hostiles, but when it mattered, I didn't.
If you are playing this game for the first time, be careful who you kill :)

yup its not a kill everything that moves type of game XD
b4 attacking click (or was it right click) the creature to check if its hostile especially humanoid types

side not its pretty much the same in UU2
Incidentally, this is not the case in the early Ultima games (1-4 at least, maybe 5).

In early Ultima, if you kill an NPC and then leave the area, the NPC will be back when you return to the area. In fact, in Ultima 3, one early game strategy for earning money is to enter a certain town that lacks guards and slaughter the townspeople. Take the chests they drop, and leave and come back.

Be aware that doing this in Ultima 4 will cost you virtue, and in Ultima 5 will cost you karma.

Ultima 1 and 2 actually *require* you to do things that anger the guards in order to beat the game; Ultima 3 does not, but it is still a good way to get money (though not my preferred method).

If you are thinking about a certain pair of boots, then yeah. Restart, because those boots make the rest of the game much simpler. I suppose I have my next challenge, though. Sanct Flam ftw!

Edit: If you are thinking about something else, then drop me a line. Maybe I can help.
