Has anyone finished Ultima 7 yet? I get a crash issue at the cube generator, interested in whether anyone has managed to get past this point in the game.

What are the conditions under which this crash is occurring? (Where are you at the moment it happens, what are you doing, where are you in the plot, do you have the appropriate 'protection', etc.)

As far as the plot goes, I've destroyed the other 2 generators, and need to go to the Den to continue my tracking of Elizabeth and Abraham. I do have the appropriate 'protection'.

As soon as I trigger the first pop-up pathway from the starting central platform, the game crashes every time, sooner or later, with the error message "Ultima VII self-check reveals a corrupt game. This occurs rarely, but may be corrected by reverting to an earlier saved game."

It also throws this exception every time I try to save, after triggering the pathway. Before doing so, the game has no issues.

I've had a gander around the 'net trying to see if this has been reported before, however I can find no reference to such a problem.

I haven't used any cheats whatsoever (apart from FoV :P). I've tried running the maze at 30K cycles, 4K cycles, with and without sound, with no luck.

I also tried on my laptop, with the same result :-/

Okay, that's probably a random glitch. I don't remember any specific issue of that sort occurring as part of the game's release, so something may have scrambled your save file. Is it possible to revert back a bit and try again?
If I remember correctly, I did try with a much earlier save game, however I will give it a go this evening with as early a save game as I have.

Thanks for your responses mate.

I'm not very experienced with DOS gaming, but I have a suggestion you could try that seemed to fix a crash issue I had with Wing Commander 2 just awhile ago. (assuming you're running Ultima 7 in its DOS form and not Exult)

Go into your DOSBox configuration file for Ultima 7 (should be "dosboxUltima7" or something) and find "fullresolution=", "output=" and "aspect=". Whatever is after the "=" change to the following:

fullresolution=0x0 (or your monitor's native resolution)
output=ddraw
aspect=true

This will correct the image if you're using a widescreen monitor (the image won't stretch), though you're probably more familiar with DOS gaming than I am and have already done this, but for some odd reason when I did this with Wing Commander 2 the game stopped crashing at the beginning too. Hope what little I know of DOS helps.
I know this is a very old post, but I am having exactly the same problem at exactly the same point in the game. weird
This is apparently a game corruption issue, although it might just come down to misfiring scripts - see if you can revert to a game before you approached the island and go there with DOSbox's speed set to a low value, and perhaps disable sound while you're doing so.

Otherwise, it might be possible to tinker with the game flags (although I'm afraid I don't know which ones are involved in this quest stage), or use the hackmover to bypass the bridges once you're inside the cube (if you can get there without it crashing).

Failing that, it might also be possible to spawn the 'small' cube using the developer console and thereby bypass the cube generator, although you'd need to check the Exult site (or another similar source) to find out what it's item ID is. This may or may not allow you to interrogate the NPCs in Buc's Den and elsewhere, but you don't absolutely have to do that to proceed.
I finished the GOG version of U7 and posted this in the other thread about the same issue:

Hello, sorry I never got back to you.
I isolated the issue to being the first drawbridge that opens - that is what corrupts the game for some reason. I did find a way around it:

I got past this by setting up my own install of dosbox and copying over the files so I could access U7's debug menu (the cheat menu). I then just hackmoved myself straight to the middle of the cube, finished the event, saved, and moved the save back to the original install and it ran normally. You could also customize the new DOSBox to run it with decent performance, but I was lazy and just stuck with gog's shell

If you need more detailed instructions let me know and I'll try to get back to you sooner than 4 months, lol

Exult is a good program but I prefer playing U7 vanilla for nostalgia's sake
Its the first drawbridge to enter the maze that corrupts the game.
Hope it helps
