I must be doing something wrong. I'm running V1.2 - straight from GoG. I haven't made it past the first 2 missions yet without losing at least one troop in each mission. I'm on n00b level.

The main problem seems to the zerg rush tactics of the aliens. I can't seem to handle one at a time -- instead, as soon as one is spotted the rest show up. And by rest I mean 1 starshocker, 2 flatsters, 1 moraman, and 2 brainthings.

Being a tactical game, you'd figure if you have good cover, and a cross-fire, you could take down a few before they actually get to your position and you need to fall back. But instead, they just keep rushing you. The range/RoF and stopping power of the zap-guns isn't enough. Instead, I end up trying to kite the non-ranged guys -- which is kinda lame. But the ranged guys toast me.

Is there a way to deal with them one at a time?

Suggestions?
Don't play in real time: pause the more.
Have energy guns in hands, to be the more ready to shoot at flatsters who resist bullets.
Yes the beginning of the game can be though, when your men aren't be able to much see things and sustain damage.
The worst will be your first encounter with cultists, here you'll have to set a trap, save and load often.
Then the game becomes more easy.
I play the thoughest difficulty, as I'm used to the game, and the game is ok (after the beginning).

Try building up some stealth stats, maybe train a few people as stalkers. Use silencers on firearms or try blades or whatever doesn't go boom, and make use of the crouching and crawling modes rather than running around making noise. I find they tend to gang up on you much less when you are quiet. Researching larger capacity for the landing pod helps your odds too by giving you a maximum of seven people rather than five.
After watching a youtube play-through, I discovered the "burst" and "quick fire" modes. Now, its a lot easier.

Though, against mutants the game basically seems to be: "form a firing line". Against cyborgs its a bit more interesting due to area-effect weapons.

Just got a sniper -- boy is that fun.
