Aftershock: "enable_system_console=TRUE" in the shortcut, then [ ~ ] ingame (or [ ù ] for non-gog French game)

do you mean adding "--option enable_system_console=TRUE" or just "enable_system_console=TRUE" in either case neither work

Yes, add it after "option".
Maybe the key to see the console window is different for australian keyboard? Try them all.
