Hi Guys and Girls!

Since roughly two weeks i am working on a 4k texture mod for Turok2Ex which i call the "Ultra64" mod.
I wanted to do this mod for a long while now, but the original engine limited me, until now ;-D
My goal is to keep as close to the originals atmosphere and style as possible while getting the to look more photorealistic and ready for higher resolutions like 4k.

For this reason i am currently creating my own set of 2048x2048 phototextures.
Great parts of worlds 1-4 are already retextured, 5 & 6 will take a bit longer, as they will need handcrafted sci-fi textures.

But enough of the talking, let screenshots speak ;-)

Nice, thanks!
But if the terrain textures become better, the weapon textures will stick out, in a bad way. Are you planning to redo these as well?

I will indeed also try to redo the weapon textures, but they will be done last.
For one reason because i might need the kex editor with proper model preview for that.
Another problem i am currently fighting with is, that many world texture coordinates in Turok 2 are neither properly aligned nor properly scaled for highres textures.
I guess this was done due to the lowres, limitited pallete nature of the originals, where one wouldnt notice seams as much.

The first beta release is planned for May.
More Screenshots attached to this post.

Edit:
I know upped more screenshots to dropbox and also created a ModDB profile.

This looks very good. I'm really looking forward to playing Turok 2 with this mod.
First beta out now!
Over one month of work, over 400 textures finally shining in new splendor.

You can grab it here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/t2soe-ultra64/downloads

Note: as this is still a beta, not all textures are replaced yet (most are levels 1-4) and there are problems i can't do a thing about, like missing mipmapping.
See the readme for possible workarounds.
I'm downloading it now. Is there some kind of trailer video or some comparsion screenshots that could be used for promoting this mod a little bit more?

There are no direct comparison Screenshots yet, but thats a fine idea, i will do some today.
Thanks for your input! :)

Edit: Here a comparison Video of the "Port of Adia" Intro

Unfortunately it's out of sync du to differences in loading time but it should suffice to get an impression.

Thanks for the video. I played about 2 h with the mod now and so far I like it. No crashes or slowdowns at all. The only thing I noticed is that some textures (especially wall textures) are flickering. You can see what I mean in your video at the 00:10 second mark. Is there a way to fix that?

Glad to hear :D

Yes, the flickering is a known issue.
The Kex-Engine is currently missing a feature called mipmapping, which would scale down the textures with distance to avoid this.

I talked to Kaiser about this issue, he said he is thinking about to implement it, but it will not be easy (i guess because of the screenspace calculations).

For now a possible way to milder the problem is to use downsampling, either via your graphicscard-driver, or ingame with the cfg command r_resolutionscale_fixedscale "x", where x stands for the multiplier of the resolution.
For example r_resolutionscale_fixedscale "2" will render the picture with twice the resolution internaly and the then scale it down to your set monitor-resolution.
But it will still flicker a little bit.

Any news about BETA 2 or a full 1.0 version? I've read on Moddb that BETA 2 should have been released on June 4th but it's not available yet. Has the release been postponed?

Sorry for the late reply!
Yes indeed, the release of Beta 2 has been postponed.
The reason is that i think that i havent added enough new textures yet to really legitimate a release for now.

As the project progresses, i find it increasingly difficult to find sources for photographing where i live.
If someone living somewhere is willing to contribute additional source photos, that would help quite a bit ;-)

I cant tell exactly when Beta 2 will come out, with some help or luck it will be this month.
Just released version 0.2 of the Ultra64 mod. Grab it here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/t2soe-ultra64/downloads/ultra64-02

wakey: Just released version 0.2 of the Ultra64 mod.
This is great. I'll definitely check the new version out soon.

Is there any kind of changelog for the new version? Would be interesting to know what has been added, removed, edited, replaced etc.

Also, have you recieved any new info from Kaiser about the missing mip mapping?
Unfortunately no changelog yet, as this Version just added more textures really.
But i can see how it would have been interesting to know where exactly i added what.
I guess it doesnt hurt trying to keep a log in the future.

No news from Kaiser yet.
As a performance intensive workaround downsampling can be used, altough the game runs much smoother since the last few patches.
